Who we are

Our formation and identity

The Peoples Democratic Party was formed by citizens, professionals, workers, farmers, traders and young Kenyans who concluded that the country's politics had drifted away from the people it is meant to serve. PDP was founded to return authority to the wananchi — hence our slogan, Mamlaka kwa Wananchi.

PDP is a registered national party organised from the ward upwards. Our identity is carried in our symbol, the traditional lyre, which represents Kenya's cultural roots, harmony between communities, and the many strings that must be tuned together for the nation to sound as one.

PDP exists because Kenya needs a political vehicle that is democratic inside as well as outside: one that nominates fairly, accounts for its money, respects its members and keeps its promises in office.

Party Leader

Hon. James Omingo Magara, MGH

James Omingo Magara, born 20 September 1961, is a Kenyan politician and the Party Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party. He served as the Member of Parliament for South Mugirango Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya from 2001 to 2009. He first won the seat in a by-election in 2001 on a Ford-Kenya ticket, replacing his brother Enoch Nyakieya Magara, who had died in a road accident. He retained the seat in the 2002 general election on a Ford-People ticket and again in the 2007 general election on an ODM ticket, and served as Assistant Minister for Trade. In December 2009 the High Court of Kenya declared the South Mugirango parliamentary seat vacant due to irregularities in the election process, although Magara himself was not found guilty of any rigging. He joined the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the June 2010 by-election, which was won by Manson Nyamweya of Ford-People. In 2013 he contested the Kisii senatorial seat, finishing third in a closely fought race won by Chris Obure. He now leads PDP under the call of Mamlaka kwa Wananchi, returning authority to the people through accountable, participatory politics.

Chief executive officer of the party, responsible for party records, correspondence and the national secretariat.

Custodian of party funds, budgets and financial reporting to the National Executive Committee.

Runs the day-to-day operations of the national secretariat and coordinates party programmes across the counties.
